MONTGOMERY BUCKS FLAG RUGBY

Fun. Confidence. Community First
Flag Rugby is the non-contact version of rugby designed specifically for schools and community programs. It’s fast-moving, inclusive, and built around skill development in a safe, fun environment.
Every player runs, passes, and scores. The game is continuous and free-flowing, which means your child is always involved — learning teamwork, coordination, and confidence with every session.
Our Flag program focuses on:
- Skill development through games and activities
- Building confidence and teamwork
- Creating a positive, high-energy environment
- Introducing the core values of rugby in a safe, non-contact format
No experience is necessary — just bring energy and a willingness to have fun.

Why Rugby for My Child?
Rugby may be new to many families — and that’s part of what makes it such a great opportunity.
It’s Truly a Team Sport
Every player handles the ball. Every player plays offense and defense. There are no “bench warmers” or position stereotypes at this level — just teamwork, communication, and shared success.

It Builds Confidence
Because everyone runs, passes, and scores, children quickly gain confidence in their abilities. The non-contact flag format allows them to learn the game safely while building skills step by step.
It Teaches Respect
Respect for teammates, coaches, officials, and opponents is a core value of rugby. Sportsmanship isn’t optional — it’s built into the culture of the game.

It Develops Athletic Skills
Flag rugby improves:
- Agility
- Hand-eye coordination
- Spatial awareness
- Speed and conditioning
- Decision-making under pressure
These skills translate to every other sport your child may play.
It’s Fun and Inclusive
Rugby welcomes all body types and athletic abilities. There’s a place for everyone. Our goal is to create a positive, high-energy environment where kids feel supported, encouraged, and excited to come back each week.
Flag Rugby is about learning, laughing, and growing — while building the foundation for a lifetime of confidence and teamwork.
Parent FAQ
Is Flag Rugby safe?
Yes. Our Flag program is non-contact, meaning there is no tackling. Instead of contact, players “tackle” by pulling a flag from the ball carrier’s belt. The focus is on skill development, teamwork, and fun in a safe, structured environment.
All sessions are supervised by trained coaches who emphasize proper technique, spacing, and sportsmanship.
Does my child need experience?
Not at all. Most of our Flag players are brand new to rugby. We teach the fundamentals from the ground up in an encouraging and supportive setting.
How are teams organized?
Players are grouped by grade level (based on the 2026–2027 school year). We aim to create balanced groups that maximize participation and development.
What does my child need to bring?
- Athletic shorts (without pockets preferred)
- T-shirt or athletic top
- Cleats or sneakers
- Water bottle
We provide flags and all necessary equipment. Mouthguards are optional at the Flag level but encouraged.
What if my child has never played a team sport before?
Flag Rugby is a great first team sport. Because the game is continuous and inclusive, every child is involved in play. Our coaches focus on encouragement, teamwork, and building confidence.
Can parents stay and watch?
Absolutely. We encourage families to attend and support. Flag Rugby is a community program, and we want it to feel welcoming and inclusive for everyone.
What happens after Flag Rugby?
Flag Rugby serves as a fun introduction to the sport. As players grow, they have the opportunity to continue developing through our youth programs and competitive teams within Montgomery Bucks Rugby Club.
We emphasize three things at MBRFC:
- Teamwork. Scoring tries is awesome, but we have no superstars in rugby. No one scores without the help of all of the other players on the field. We pass the ball to our teammates, we encourage others to do the same. All the time.
- Sportsmanship. Rugby is very different from other sports. We respect our opponents, we respect the referee. We don’t talk trash to anyone else, the referee included. We shake hands with our opponents after a match, win or lose.
- Having fun. The coaches are volunteering because they all love this game and want the players to enjoy the experience. We mix fun games in with the drills in practice to keep the players engaged while also building their skills. Oh, and tiring them out. It’s summer, kids get bored, and there’s an unspoken agreement that you bring your child to the field and we return them to you tired.
