In the Spring 2013 season, the Men’s team added two new faces to the coaching staff. Head coach Steve Green and assistant coach (forwards) Tim Bucher. Both coaches bring decades worth of rugby knowledge to the team. Prior to joining NPRFC they coached for the West Chester University Men’s program. A big thank you goes out to Steve and Tim for their dedication and devotion to the Men’s program in the Spring and Fall 2013 seasons. The Men’s team looks forward to continually work with the new coaches to improve and excel in the upcoming 2014 season.
Every June the Mens team holds a 7s tournament at John Clemens field in Hatfield, Pa. This event is crucial to the financial stability of the Mens program as this is the most profitable fundraiser. The 2013 tournament was a success with 18 team competing between Mens and Womens divisions. The Mens team plans to improve and grow the tournament for 2014.
After a relatively short spring season the Men’s team was back practicing by late July to prepare for the upcoming season. This fall season would be a little different than ones of past. With the addition of a division 4 to the EPRU, division 3 now consists of six teams. Each team playing the other five teams twice (one home, one away) results in a (long) ten game fall season. The team’s home opener was against long time rival Old Gaelic. It was a hard fought match against a strong competitor and North Penn came on the losing side with a final score of 22 – 6. The team took a lot away from the game and looked to the future games to be played. Unfortunately, the team was flooded with injuries that sidelined player for multiple weeks or the entire season. Having these players unable to participate made the long season that more difficult. The Men’s team finished the season with strong showings against South Jersey and Reading. Although they were not wins, the team played their hearts out and won the respect of their competitors. The Men’s team is waiting the upcoming Spring season.
Early on in the Fall season the Men’s team was contacted to play a match against the All Deaf Rugby Football Club (ADRFC) from Washington D.C. ADRFC is a team deaf and hard of hearing rugby player. The Men’s team agreed to the match to be played on November 9, 2013. ADRFC would be in the Philadelphia area for the USA Eagles vs. New Zealand Maori All Blacks game that was taking place at PPL Park (Union Soccer Stadium). On a sunny but brisk November Saturday morning the current North Penn Men’s team along with many previous North Penn players combined to take on ADRFC. The match was very exciting with North Penn taking an early lead, but ADRFC would not go down without a fight. ADRFC touched down a couple of tries late in the second half to close the gap. North Penn held off ADRFC with a final score of 24 – 19.
